Enclave is Tato Laviera’s second book of verse. As in his successful La Carreta Made a U-Turn, Laviera celebrates the Puerto Rican experience in New York. While the earlier book focuses on events and scenes, Enclave concentrates on the individual. Laviera provides a gallery of portraits of the indomitable inhabitants of the enclave, whose lives are evoked through the soulful rhythmic songs “en clave.”
Enclave eBook Tato Laviera
I bought a first edition copy from the poet himself, one night in 1981 during a poetry reading. There was no one in the audience but the lady bartender and myself...it was a great "semi" private reading..It was the first time I had heard a Nuyorican poet, a spanglish poet..up to that point I had only learned proper poetry and use of either Spanish or English language..so it was revelation as to how far one could stretch language and possibilities..I would say that it opened doors of the imagination for me as a Puerto Rican poet and artist. I carried my copy of Enclave like a piece of land from Puerto Rico wherever I lived, whether in New York, Paris or Amsterdam. Incidentally it was in Amsterdam in 1985 where I heard of Tato Laviera again, announced as a visiting poet in Holland.Something that made feel very proud...
